The type of game where you project yourself into a little avatar is a little wish fulfillment of an imaginary version of identity that's just simple: I am Mario. Look at me, I'm just this little being in the world, and its so neat and its so clean and its such a relief; that escape from the messiness of what it actually means to be conscious, to be a person in the world, to have identity. It's a mess. The Lara Croft- such a tidy package. Mario, and first person shooters bring that back to the center- that's completing the illusion, because now I don't even have to see the little thing, its just the center of this imaginary, cohesive identity is actually located here, in space, where I have this mess that is actually me. So I can replace the mess with this neat, cohesive package of what it might be like to be conscious in this imaginary universe where consciousness is neat and clean and safe.
